Vol. 501 No. 6

Written Answers. - Millennium Projects.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

288 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if his Department was consulted regarding the proposed millennium spire in O'Connell Street, Dublin 1; if his Department will be making a financial contribution toward this proposed project; and his views on whether the people of Dublin should be consulted directly on this proposal before a final decision is made. [6992/99]

Projects of the type proposed for O'Connell Street, Dublin, are a matter for the local authority in question and my Department was not consulted on this project. My Department has no plans to make a financial contribution towards it.

Before making its decision on the proposed project, Dublin Corporation is required to follow the procedures set out in Part X of the Local Government (Planning and Development) Regulations, 1994, which provides for the public notification of proposed local authority development. Under those regulations, any submissions or observations made by the public must be considered by the elected members of the local authority before the development can proceed.
