Vol. 501 No. 6

Written Answers. - Wildlife Rangers.

Austin Deasy

Question:

321 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands if she will appoint wildlife rangers in each county with the specific duty of protecting wildlife habitats. [6964/99]

Recruitment of additional rangers for my Department, through the Civil Service Commission, is at an advanced stage. It is intended to make 34 appointments from this competition as soon as the necessary procedures are completed. Some appointments will be to fill current vacancies among permanent staff, and the balance will be temporary rangers on three year contracts of employment. Panels are also being set up from which further appointments may be made.

It is hoped to make the 34 appointments at 30 different locations around the country. Once these appointments have been made there will be at least one ranger based in every county.

Ranger duties are primarily directed at implementing my Department's wildlife conservation policies throughout the country.
