327 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the progress, if any, made regarding the provision of pedestrian and cycle tracks adjacent to the canal systems; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [7040/99]
The Grand and Royal Canals are included in the current Waymarked Ways – Walking Ireland 1999 Guide.
The Dublin Transport Office and Dublin Corporation have had discussions with my Department regarding cycle tracks on canal property in the Dublin area and my Department has agreed to consider any application on its merits. A specific proposal with respect to the Grand Canal at Portobello has been submitted to my Department for approval and is being examined at present.
328 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the plans, if any, she has to provide better facilities for boat users on the canals; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [7041/99]
Since my appointment as Minister, I have continued with the programme of restoration and development of the Royal and Grand Canals. Under the EU Operational Programme for Tourism, 1994-99, over £13 million was allocated for that purpose and £10.4 million has been spent to date. The balance of this funding and other Exchequer capital amounting to a total of £1.525 million is scheduled to be spent this year. It is my intention to continue with improvements to the canals infrastructure in the coming years.
329 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the number of lock keepers employed on the Royal and Grand Canals; the vacant posts, if any, in this regard; if so, when these positions will be advertised and filled; and if she will make a statement on the matter. There are 22 lock-keepers employed at present on the canals in question, including the Barrow navigation, and while no vacancies exist it is expected that it will be necessary to advertise and fill two vacancies later this year.
