Vol. 501 No. 6

Written Answers. - Special Olympics.

Bernard Allen

Question:

377 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the reason Special Olympics Ireland only received £60,000 funding for the World Games being held in July 1999 in view of the fact that it received £200,000 from the previous Government for the last World Games held in 1996. Question:

380 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the funding, if any, allocated to the Special Olympics Ireland in 1999 to cater for the 12,000 members who are involved in its activities. [7009/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 377 and 380 together.

I understand that the grant of £200,000 referred to by the Deputy was once off in nature and specifically included a sum of £100,000 for expenditure associated with attendance at the 1995 World Games, with the balance earmarked for the wider development of the organisation.

Special Olympics Ireland's application for funding in respect of the 1999 World Games is currently being examined in my Department in consultation with the Irish Sports Council and a decision will be conveyed to the organisation in the near future.

As Special Olympics Ireland is currently being advised of its grant level for 1999, the Deputy will appreciate that it would not be appropriate for me to publicise the level of grant for any organisation in advance of the organisation itself being formally advised in the first place.
