Vol. 501 No. 6

Written Answers. - Sports Funding.

Bernard Allen

Question:

387 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the reason he is differentiating between high performance sport and other sports in the 1999 allocations to national governing bodies of sport; and the parameters he is using to differentiate between high performance sport and other sports. [7016/99]

No differentiation is made between sports as high performance or otherwise under the grants scheme for national governing bodies of sport, NGBs. The criteria used are as outlined in the Department's section 15 and 16 reference book prepared under the Freedom of Information Act, 1997.

There is a separate international carding scheme introduced in 1998 to provide a range of supports, both financial and non-financial, to assist Ireland's most talented players and athletes realise their potential to perform successfully at the highest international levels. This scheme replaced the outstanding sportsperson grant scheme operated by the Department of Education and Science between 1986 and 1997.
