Vol. 501 No. 6

Written Answers. - Historical Sites.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

83 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the report, if any, in place or proposed dealing with sites of historical and cultural importance on our islands. [6921/99]

Dúchas, the heritage service of my Department, has produced many reports and publications for various historical sites covering sites on our islands and this number is growing annually. The main activity conducted by my Department in relation to the protection of archaeological sites in recent years is the compilation of the Record of Monuments and Places in relation to each county in the State. I have arranged to have details of this programme forwarded to the Deputy. Additional historical sites on islands will be recorded in the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage being undertaken by Dúchas.

Publications are detailed in lists which I will also forward to the Deputy. Many of these publications are available in European languages as well as Irish and English and they apply to sites throughout the State.
