Vol. 501 No. 6

Written Answers. - Export Licences.

John Perry

Question:

93 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the proposals, if any, she has to prevent genealogical material being brought out of Ireland without an official export licence; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [6918/99]

Section 49 of the National Cultural Institutions Act, 1997, provides an enabling power to institute an export licence requirement in respect of proposed sale for export or export of articles of genealogical interest. The Minister also has specific power to declare by order any document, which is in his/her opinion of genealogical interest to be an article coming under the export licence requirement. Under section 50 of the 1997 Act an applicant for such a licence must facilitate the Minister in the making of copies of any such article before any licence will be issued. These provisions have yet to be commenced.
