Vol. 502 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Attendance.

Michael Ring

Question:

191 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of children on each island who must attend primary schools on the mainland; and the assistance his Department issues in each case. [7289/99]

My Department has no details at present of the number of children living on offshore islands who must attend primary school on the mainland. However, I would not anticipate that the figure would be high since there are primary school facilities on many of our off-shore islands.

The question of providing grant assistance to such pupils is being considered by my Department at present, and I hope to be in a position to make an announcement on the matter in the near future.
