Question:

57 Mr. Ferris asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of persons under 18 currently in detention; the principal offences involved; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7233/99]

There were 138 persons under 18 years of age detained in a prison or place of detention for which my Department has responsibility on Thursday, 4 March. Persons under 18 years of age may be also detained in special schools provided by the Department of Education and Science.

The following table shows the principal offences involved in relation to persons under 18 years of age detained in a prison or place of detention:
