Vol. 502 No. 3

Written Answers. - Rail Network.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

167 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Public Enterprise the plans, if any, she has to upgrade the Nenagh to Limerick railway line as part of the recently announced proposals or as part of general planning. [7878/99]

The high level task force, set up to prioritise the recommendations contained in the IRMS Review of Railway Safety in Ireland, reported to me recently. The report contains a detailed railway safety programme for the years 1999-2003 prepared by Iarnród Éireann.

Under this programme the company plan to renew a number of bridges, to undertake risk mitigation works at level crossings on the line and to increase line maintenance by selective renewal of rails or sleepers.

At the end of the 1999-2003 programme approximately 150 miles of jointed track will still exist on the passenger network. It is planned to upgrade this track, including the Nenagh line, early in the following five year programme.
