Vol. 502 No. 3

Written Answers. - Bovine Disease Controls.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

188 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the plans, if any, he has to introduce a vaccine to control the alarming spread of brucellosis in bovines; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7572/99]

Although there has been an increase in incidence levels, the position is that some 99.8 per cent of the country's 145,000 herds are free of brucellosis. All aspects of the brucellosis programme, including the potential use of vaccine in limited circumstances, are under review. Vaccination would have significant implications in terms of cost and trade restrictions.
