Vol. 502 No. 3

Written Answers. - Tax Allowances.

Ivan Yates

Question:

282 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Finance if the tax affairs of a person (details supplied) in County Wicklow will be clarified; if she is receiving her full tax free allowance for the last year and the forthcoming tax year; and the rebate, if any, due. [7947/99]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that the tax-free allowances granted to the taxpayer for the current tax year (1998/99) were based on the information available to the inspector of taxes at the beginning of the tax year. The taxpayer has not been in contact with the tax office for some years, however, and as a result it was necessary to estimate the amount of mortgage interest relief due to her. It will also be necessary to adjust the amount deducted in respect of her social welfare income as one child ceased being dependent on 11 January 1999.

To enable the inspector to review her tax affairs for 1998-99, and make any refund which may be due, the taxpayer should send her P60 and details of her mortgage repayments to the inspector after 5 April 1999.

The taxpayer's tax-free allowances for 1999/2000 have been amended in accordance with the information supplied by the Deputy. It may be necessary to revise them further when full details of the taxpayer's mortgage repayments are made available to the inspector.
