Vol. 502 No. 3

Written Answers. - Motor Vehicles Registration.

John McGuinness

Question:

283 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Finance if he will introduce personalised number plates for all vehicles; if his attention has been drawn to the revenue potential for each local authority in relation to the proposal; and if he will include the proposal as part of the legislation for reform of local government. [7977/99]

I have no plans to introduce personalised number plates for vehicles. It should be noted that vehicle registration tax goes directly to the central Exchequer, and not to local authorities.

The Office of the Revenue Commissioners are responsible for the registration of all motor vehicles in the State. Under existing legislation, each motor vehicle declared for registration must be assigned a unique number in a specified format which ensures a transparent and consistent system of registration. A key feature of the registration system is that the registration number assigned is unique to each vehicle and is not transferable.

I am also advised by the Department of the Environment and Local Government that it has no plans to include such proposals as part of the legislation for reform of local government.
