Vol. 502 No. 3

Written Answers. - Hospital Accommodation.

Question:

328 Mr. Hayes asked the Minister for Health and Children the number of intensive care unit beds at the Tallaght Hospital; if he is satisfied with the allocation of intensive care unit beds at the hospital; if similar sized hospitals in the Dublin region have a similar allocation of intensive care unit beds; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7844/99]

There are nine intensive care unit beds provided at Tallaght Hospital and I am satisfied with this number. Seven of these beds are currently in use.

I can also confirm that similar sized hospitals in the Dublin region who are comparable to Tallaght Hospital have a similar allocation of intensive care unit beds. For example, in comparison to Tallaght Hospital, St Vincent's Hospital has eight intensive care unit beds with seven of these beds currently in use.

Obviously the complexity of an individual hospital's case mix is also a factor in determining its requirements for these type of beds.
