Vol. 502 No. 3

Written Answers. - Mental Health Legislation.

Liz McManus

Question:

356 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Health and Children when he will bring forward the Mental Health (Amendment) Bill; if it will comply with the European Convention on Human Rights; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7957/99]

A new mental health Bill is currently being prepared in the Office of the Attorney General. It is envisaged that the Bill will be published in the next Dáil session. The new Bill will bring Irish legislation into conformity with the European Convention on Human Rights and will provide a modern framework for the care and treatment of persons with a mental disorder who refuse or who are incapable of seeking treatment or protection in their own interest or in the interests of others.
