Vol. 502 No. 3

Written Answers. - Family Support Services.

John McGuinness

Question:

459 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs if an application for funding from Tullow community development initiative will be examined in relation to the family resource centre initiative or the community development programme; and if this application will be expedited with a view to giving the group a positive reply. [8074/99]

Funding is available from the Department of Social, Community and Family Affairs towards the cost of staffing and equipping of local resource centres which provide a focal point for community development activities in disadvantaged areas under the community development programme and the family and community services resource centre programme.

Applications from groups seeking inclusion in the CDP are assessed by an independent technical group established to advise me on decisions in relation to the selection of new areas and groups for funding.

To date, no such application for either the community development programme or the family and community services resource centre programme has been received in my Department from the group referred to in the Deputy's question. Should the group decide to apply, the application will, of course, receive due consideration.

As I announced at the beginning of February, Carlow is one of the areas identified for the expansion of the community development and family and community resource centre programmes. The location of the projects is to be decided following further consultation locally. The group referred to in the Deputy's question will be included in that consultation process.
