Question:

553 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the average number of man hours per week taken up by prisoner escorts in the Castlerea district; the additional responsibilities of an Garda Síochána in the district since the opening of the Castlerea place of detention; the plans, if any, he has to provide additional resources to an Garda Síochána in that district; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8402/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 552 and 553 together.

The detailed deployment of Garda personnel to individual areas is a matter for the Garda authorities who have informed me that the strength of the Castlerea District as of 3/3/99 is 39, all ranks. Since the opening of Castlerea Place of Detention, two additional members have been allocated to Castlerea. One official car and a personnel carrier have also been allocated to convey prisoners to the remand courts.

The Garda authorities have further informed me that the average number of man hours per week taken up by prisoner escorts is 150 hours. Additional responsibilities of the Garda Síochána in this area also include patrolling of the prison boundary and contact with the prison authorities on the arrival of new prisoners.
