Vol. 502 No. 3

Written Answers. - Teaching Qualifications.

Nora Owen

Question:

584 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will have examinations made into the position of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 13 who has an expertise in special education but cannot use this expertise in the national school service; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7662/99]

The matter of the recognition of teacher qualifications is a function of the primary administration section of my Department. To date the person referred to by the Deputy has not applied to that section to have her qualifications recognised for teaching purposes in this country. On receipt of the person's qualifications, my officials will undertake an immediate examination of same to determine if those qualifications entitle her to teach in any capacity in this country.

In addition, in certain cases, a tutor may be employed to deliver one-to-one tuition to pupils awaiting placement or to pupils who are too ill to attend school. This tuition my take place in the pupil's home or in an approved alternative placement. In such cases, an allowance is made to the parent/guardian of the pupil to cover the cost of such provision. The demand for tutors to deliver such a service varies from time to time and persons seeking to deliver such tuition should apply to the special education section of my Department.
