Vol. 502 No. 3

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

589 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason for the delay in appointing a senior speech and language therapist to the special class for autism in Scoil Mhuire, Leixlip, and the provision of transport to and from the school; when these matters will be dealt with; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7698/99]

Speech and language therapy services for pupils attending the two special classes for children with autism at Scoil Muire, Leixlip, are provided by an outreach team based in Beechpark, Stillorgan, County Dublin and funded by the Eastern Health Board.

I have asked my officials to carry out a review of the general situation concerning the provision of speech therapy services in special schools and special classes, in consultation with the Department of Health and Children. My objective is to ensure that the system is in a position to respond in a positive and efficient manner to the needs of children requiring such a service. The needs of the school referred to by the Deputy will be considered in the context of this review.

With regard to transport arrangements for the pupils in question, I understand that a transport service is now provided for six of the seven pupils presently attending the special classes. Arrangements are also being made for a grant to issue to the school to facilitate the appointment of an escort on this service.

I understand that the seventh pupil resides some distance from the school and my officials are presently investigating suitable educational provision nearer to this pupil's home.
