Vol. 502 No. 3

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Willie Penrose

Question:

622 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Education and Science the steps, if any, he will take to ensure that an appropriate secure railing is erected around The Bower national school, Athlone, County Westmeath; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7971/99]

The school building formerly known as The Bower national school is no longer required for national school purposes since the summer of 1998 as a result of an amalgamation at primary school level. Following this amalgamation, agreement has been reached with the owners of the building to release my Department's interest in the property, subject to certain conditions.

Arrangements are currently under way to effect the release process. There is no question of my Department providing funds to secure a site which is not owned by my Department and which is no longer required for educational purposes.
