Vol. 502 No. 3

Written Answers. - Pupil-Teacher Ratio.

Michael Creed

Question:

70 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education and Science the proposals, if any, he has to improve the pupil-teacher ratio in multi-class situations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8190/99]

Seán Barrett

Question:

80 Mr. Barrett asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of teachers required to eliminate all classes over 30 without increasing the average class sizes elsewhere in the system. [8175/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 70 and 80 together.

The Deputies will be aware from my recent announcement that it is proposed to implement from 1 September 1999 a staffing schedule which will substantially reduce class sizes in primary schools. This schedule has been structured to ensure that all primary schools will operate to a maximum class average of 30 pupils. Schools of all sizes will benefit.

It is projected that approximately 380 teaching posts will be provided to implement this major initiative.
