Vol. 503 No. 2

Written Answers. - State Funding.

Bernard Allen

Question:

179 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children the reason he has rejected an application made by the Southern Health Board for a £150,000 allocation towards redevelopment work at the Erinville Maternity Hospital, Western Road, Cork, due to a demolition order being put on some of its accommodation; and if he will make a decision on this in view of the fact that the board is obliged to fund the necessary work out of its routine maintenance programme fund. [9464/99]

The existing facilities for maternity and neonatal care at Erinville Hospital will be transferred to the new amalgamated maternity unit at Cork University Hospital. This development which is currently at design stage will provide the best in modern facilities for expectant mothers and new born babies.

In November 1998 the Southern Health Board applied to my Department for funding to carry out alterations to the former eye, ear and throat hospital in order to relocate there the accommo dation in an old building on the Erinville Hospital site. This old building was used to accommodate nurse changing, doctors offices and some outpatient clinics and had to be vacated due to structural problems.
It was not possible to make specific provision for these works in the Department's capital programme for 1999 because the capital budget for 1999 is fully committed, but the matter will be examined in the context of a review of the Department's medium-term capital programme.
