Vol. 503 No. 2

Written Answers. - Litter Pollution.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

197 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the proposals, if any, she has following her meetings with residents of Brompton Estate, Castleknock, County Dublin, to provide funding for the clean up, installation of security fencing and remedial works on the banks of the Royal Canal and surrounding public open space; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [9518/99]

The Deputy will be aware that I recently met with a deputation of the residents of Brompton estate including local representatives to discuss their concerns. I indicated that the boundary fencing is a matter for the adjoining landowner, which in this case is Fingal County Council as successor to the developer who constructed the original fence.

However, I suggested that a further meeting with all the relevant parties be convened with a view to finding an acceptable solution. The waterways division of my Department has written to Fingal County Council requesting it to nominate an official to attend such a meeting and it has indicated that it will nominate an official shortly.
