Vol. 503 No. 2

Written Answers. - Sand Dune Protection.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

100 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the proposals, if any, he has to provide emergency funding to carry out the remedial measures to combat the serious danger of the sand dunes being lost at Tramore, County Waterford; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9487/99]

Under the Operational Programme for Environmental Services 1994-1999 grant aid of £200,000 was made available to Waterford County Council in 1996 and 1997 towards coast protection schemes at Cunnigar and Tramore costing £266,164. I recently announced my Department's coast protection programme for 1999, under which financial assistance will be provided for projects with a total cost of some £4.7 million.

As Waterford County Council has not applied to my Department for further financial assistance towards implementation of other coast protection measures that might be required, it is not covered by the programme.
