Vol. 503 No. 3

Written Answers. - UN Year of the Elderly.

Deirdre Clune

Question:

184 Ms Clune asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the provisions or proposals, if any, he will introduce to mark the UN year of the elderly; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10164/99]

The Department of Foreign Affairs, through Ireland's Mission to the United Nations, has been actively engaged in preparing for the UN Year of Older Persons 1999. It has also participated in meetings of the National Steering Committee for the UN Year of Older Persons, set up by the National Council on Ageing and Older People (NCAOP) on the request of the Department of Health and Children. The National Steering Committee, which has met about every two months since its establishment in early 1999, has had a co-ordinating role in marking the year in Ireland. The Department of Foreign Affairs has, in particular, provided information to the committee on activities undertaken to mark the UN Year of Older Persons in the international context.

I welcome the very varied programme of events being undertaken nationally under the auspices of the National Steering Committee and am satisfied that Ireland is playing a full and active role in marking the UN Year.
