Vol. 504 No. 1

Written Answers. - Broadcasting Legislation.

Bernard Allen

Question:

33 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the sporting events which should be available on free to air television; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [11065/99]

The Major Events Television Coverage Bill, 1999 which was published on 26 April 1999 will when enacted, enable me, by order, to designate events as events of major importance to society.

Under the proposed legislation consultation with the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation, the organisers of events, broadcasters and the general public will be required before an order designating events can be made. The order will also have to be ratified by both Houses before it comes into force. I will begin the consultation process as soon as the Bill is enacted and I believe that it would not be helpful to specify particular events in advance of this process.
