Vol. 504 No. 1

Written Answers. - National Salmon Commission.

Theresa Ahearn

Question:

50 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the reason correspondence from a club (details supplied) to the national salmon management committee has not been replied to; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11212/99]

I can confirm that the club in question has been in touch with my Department on a number of issues, in particular regarding my proposal to establish the National Salmon Commission and a fish counter on the River Suir.

The position in relation to the National Salmon Commission is that nominees have been sought and details of membership and the terms of reference will be announced in the next few weeks. The commission will also be asked to complete the consultation process on the proposed salmon tagging and quota scheme.
I can also confirm that, as the angling club in question has itself sought, a fish counter will be installed on the River Suir this year by the marine institute in conjunction with the Southern Regional Fisheries Board.
A detailed reply will issue to the club shortly from my Department on the above matters.
