Vol. 504 No. 1

Written Answers. - Irish Language.

Ivor Callely

Question:

76 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the way in which the Irish language will be promoted in 1999; the plans, if any, she has for a special promotion; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [11184/99]

The Irish language will be promoted in 1999, in so far as its promotion relates to the functions of my Department, through the schemes of assistance operated by the Department itself, both within and outside the Gaeltacht, through the activities of the State boards under its aegis – particularly Údarás na Gaeltachta, Bord na Gaeilge and Bord na Leabhar Gaeilge – and through the work of the voluntary Irish language organisations which are assisted financially by my Department.

While I would not advert to it as a special promotion, work is proceeding in my Department on Bille na Gaeilge, which will be the most significant legislative measure proposed in relation to the language since the foundation of the State and will I hope have a very positive impact on the use of Irish.
