Vol. 504 No. 1

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Pat Rabbitte

Question:

86 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Education and Science if the special forum in Athlone established to deal with the opening of the special school at Ballyboden, Dublin 16 (details supplied) has made a decision regarding the opening of the school which has been postponed since September 1998; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11198/99]

My Department is currently engaged with the Eastern Health Board in planning the establishment of a pre-school unit for children with autism in the south Dublin area. It is proposed that the unit in question will be based at a national school in the area to which the Deputy refers and negotiations in this regard are taking place with the management of a school in the area.

It is intended that the Eastern Health Board, through its outreach clinical team, based at Beechpark in Stillorgan, will provide necessary support services to the unit.

It is expected that arrangements for the unit will be finalised in the very near future.
