Vol. 504 No. 1

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

98 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Education and Science the support offered to a person (details supplied) in County Donegal who has spina bifida; the resources she is entitled to; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11245/99]

I recently announced a major new development in special education services under which all children in the primary system, who have been assessed as having special needs arising from a disability, are now entitled to an automatic response to those needs.

The response may take the form of full or part-time teacher or child care support, or both, depending on the needs of the individual children involved.

I am aware that an application for child care support has been made to my Department on behalf of the child in question and another child with special needs attending the school. This request is currently being examined by my Department's Inspectorate. My Department will be in contact with the school in the near future in relation to support for the children in question.
