Vol. 504 No. 4

Written Answers. - Nurse Tutors.

Richard Bruton

Question:

193 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Health and Children if his attention has been drawn to the serious discontent among registered nurse tutors with the manner in which negotiations regarding their new role in nursing education are being handled; if his attention has further been drawn to the important professional role which nurse tutors must continue to play; and if he will have discussions with them to clarify official policy on their future role. [12187/99]

I am aware of the discontent felt by nurse tutors following the recent discussions on the implementation of the report of the commission on nursing which took place as recommended by the Labour Court recently, LCR 16084.

However, as the Deputy will be aware, the Labour Court is currently considering claims from the Alliance of Nursing Unions arising from LCR 16084. The Court met both parties on 29 and 30 April last. In view of the complexity of the issues involved, it has arranged to meet the parties again separately later this month.
I am sure the Deputy will appreciate that it would be inappropriate for me to make any comment in relation to the issues involved in advance of the Labour Court issuing its recommendation.
