Question:

218 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government when he will hold the oral hearing for the special amenity area order for the Howth peninsula in view of the urgency of conserving this amenity. [12226/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 201 and 218 together.

Fingal County Council submitted the Howth special amenity area order to me for confirmation on the 25 March 1999. As there are objections to this order, I am required under section 43(3) of the Local Government (Planning and Development) Act, 1963, to cause a public local inquiry to be held. The order is being examined in the Department at the moment and I will arrange for the holding of an inquiry as soon as possible.
