Vol. 504 No. 4

Written Answers. - Good Friday Agreement.

Proinsias De Rossa

Question:

43 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the current state of the discussions between the two Governments and the political parties in Northern Ireland regarding the full implementation of all aspects of the Good Friday Agreement; and the Government's view on the proposal for a transitional executive. [12016/99]

I refer to my reply to Priority Question No. 26. As I outlined in my answer to that question, the Government attaches the highest priority to resolving the current impasse over the formation of the Executive in order that the Good Friday Agreement can be implemented in its entirety as soon as possible.

We are working intensively with the British Government and with the Northern Ireland political parties in the search for ways in which the above objective can be achieved. A number of ideas have been put forward to break the impasse but none to date has proved successful. We are pursuing other possible options at present; however, the transitional executive proposal is not one which we believe would meet the needs of the situation and it is not, therefore, favoured by the Government.
