Vol. 504 No. 4

Written Answers. - Amsterdam Treaty.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

56 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he has satisfied himself that Commissioner Prodi will be appointed under the terms of the Amsterdam Treaty in view of the fact that it will not be finally ratified until July 1999; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10866/99]

As the Deputy may be aware, the Treaty of Amsterdam came into force on 1 May 1999, following the completion by France of its national ratification procedures in March. On 5 May the European Parliament approved Romano Prodi as Commission President until the end of this year, in accordance with the provisions of the Treaty of Amsterdam. The appointment of Commission President Prodi for a five year term beginning in January 2000, and of the nominees to the Commission College, will also be in accordance with the terms of the treaty.
