Vol. 504 No. 5

Written Answers. - Schools IT 2000 Project.

Liz McManus

Question:

157 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Education and Science if grant aid will be provided for Avondale community college, Rathdrum, County Wicklow, for the purpose of securing financial assistance for students to participate in the European computer driving licence course in view of its disadvantaged status. [12305/99]

The Schools IT 2000 project provides a comprehensive professional skills development programme in information communication training for teachers aimed at enhancing student learning through the application of ICTs across the curriculum. The policy framework document for Schools IT 2000 however, does not make specific provision for schools to pursue particular qualifications for students such as the European computer driving licence. Over 16,000 ICT training places have been provided for second level teachers to date thereby ensuring that student learning has a strong ICT skills context. Avondale community college received a total of £3,645 from my Department last year towards the purchase of computer hardware and software.
