Vol. 504 No. 5

Written Answers. - Capitation Grants.

Ulick Burke

Question:

160 Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for Education and Science his views on whether a £10 per capita grant to schools is adequate to provide for class materials and basic general equipment to establish physics and chemistry in schools at second level; his further views on whether this initiative is an adequate response to re-establish these subjects in a meaningful way at second level; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12326/99]

A special per capita grant of £10 is just one of a range of measures I am putting in place to enhance the teaching of physics and chemistry.

I recently announced a £15 million plan to support and develop the teaching of physics and chemistry in second level schools. The plan, which will run over three years, involves the modernisation of school science laboratories, the revision of the syllabi and the provision of extensive training for teachers.

These additional supports will enhance the development of physics and chemistry in schools at second level.
