Vol. 504 No. 5

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Richard Bruton

Question:

167 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of remedial teachers employed at primary level; the number or remedial teachers employed at post-primary level; the number of remedial teachers at primary level working in single schools and in clusters of two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine and ten schools. [12409/99]

A total of 1,302 remedial teacher posts have been sanctioned in the primary system and a further 350 in the second level system. My Department is currently making arrangements to extend the remedial service to all first and second level schools from September next.

The specific information requested by the Deputy in relation to the number of schools served by individual remedial teachers is not readily available in my Department. An inordinate amount of time would be involved in obtaining this information.

Paul Bradford

Question:

168 Mr. Bradford asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason the pilot scheme of job sharing between primary teachers from different schools has not been continued; his view on correspondence (details supplied) on this matter; if the situation will be reviewed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12410/99]

As the Deputy may be aware, a scheme of job sharing for primary teachers was introduced in 1997. This scheme provided for job sharing arrangements involving two permanent teachers both based in the same school.

My Department also approved, on a pilot basis, two job sharing arrangements involving teachers based in different schools. This was primarily to facilitate teachers in smaller schools who could not find a job sharing partner within the school. Initially it was the intention to limit the number of teachers job sharing between schools pending a review of the arrangements. However, there appears to be a consensus among the partners that the scheme is operating satisfactorily, and I am pleased to advise the Deputy that I have decided to continue with the pilot scheme for the 1999-2000 school year.
