Vol. 504 No. 5

Written Answers. - Job Creation.

Austin Deasy

Question:

52 Mr. Deasy asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if she has satisfied herself that enterprise boards are the more suitable method of promoting small business ventures; and the alternative structure, if any, she proposes in this regard. [12297/99]

On foot of the recommendations in the task force report on local government and local development, the Government decided last September to centralise the local enterprise support and development function in the county and city enterprise boards post 1999.

This is due recognition of the outstanding achievements by the enterprise boards in job creation. Since their establishment, the enterprise boards have assisted the creation of 16,000 jobs to date, against a target of 8,000 jobs for the initial five years of their operation.
