Vol. 504 No. 5

Written Answers. - Beef Industry.

Jan O'Sullivan

Question:

70 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the position regarding the claim against the State by Anglo Irish Beef Processors arising from a decision to cancel certain export credit insurance; if her attention has been drawn to reports that Iraq is to repay all debts to this company; the information, if any, she has on this report; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12216/99]

Proceedings against the State were initiated by Anglo Irish Beef Processors International Limited in 1989 in response to a decision by the Minister to void certain export credit cover. An amended statement of claim was lodged by the plaintiffs in 1995.

Pleadings in the case have not yet been finalised. I have no information in relation to any commitment on the part of the Iraqi Government to pay the moneys owed to the Goodman group of companies other than what I have read in the media.
