Vol. 505 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Ulick Burke

Question:

266 Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for Education and Science the number and names of national schools in County Galway which are to have reduced teacher allocation as a result of declining pupil numbers; the number of new appointments of remedial and resource teachers appointed to national schools in County Galway for September 1999; and the names of the schools involved. [13317/99]

Details of the schools in County Galway which are due to lose teaching posts from September next due to falling enrolments are attached. I would point out to the Deputy that many schools will benefit from reduced retention ratios this year.

With regard to the remedial teaching service, my priority at present is to ensure that all schools that currently have no remedial service will have access to such a service from September next.

Arrangements to extend the remedial service are currently being made in my Department. However, details of new appointments of remedial and resource teachers to national schools in County Galway have not yet been finalised.

Schools in County Galway due to gain an additional post for the 1999-2000 school year

Question:

267 Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will review the plight of rural national schools which will be reduced from three to two teachers with a view to allowing a retention period to avoid hardship in these schools; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13318/99]

The Deputy may be aware that I have recently announced a new staffing schedule which will substantially reduce class sizes in primary schools from 1 September next.

This schedule has been structured to ensure that all primary schools will operate to a maximum class average of 30 pupils. Schools of all sizes will benefit from this new schedule.

I accept that, despite the very significant improvement in the staffing schedule, the enrolment in some schools has fallen below the minimum figure required to retain existing teacher numbers. However, I can assure the Deputy that I am committed to implementing further reductions in class sizes over the next number of years which will benefit all schools, including three teacher schools.
