Vol. 505 No. 2

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Derek McDowell

Question:

152 Mr. McDowell asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has received an application for grant aid for a sports hall and gym for St. Mary's secondary school, St. Brigid's Road, Artane, Dublin 5; if so, the status of this application; when a decision on the application will be made; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13339/99]

The planning and building unit of my Department has received an application with regard to the provision of a gym at St. Mary's secondary school, St. Brigid's Road, Killester, Dublin 5.

It is the policy of my Department to provide PE halls on a phased basis as resources permit, to all schools which do not already have them.
However, due to the demands on the capital resources available, priority has had to be given for some time to the provision of essential teaching spaces. As a result it is not possible in the present circumstances to grant-aid the provision of a PE hall at this school.
