Vol. 505 No. 2

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Michael Ring

Question:

157 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science the help available for a person (details supplied) County Mayo who has difficulty with his reading ability in school; and if his junior certificate examination papers will be provided on audio tape. [13395/99]

In relation to the application for special arrangements made on behalf of the person named by the Deputy, the position is that the school that the candidate is attending appealed the Department's decision to the Special Arrangements Appeals Committee.

The majority of the members of the appeals committee and its chairperson are external to my Department and it exists to consider individual cases in a thoroughly impartial manner.

I am informed that following its consideration of this case, the committee upheld the original decision and the school has been notified of this.
