Question:

100 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Defence the cost to date of the closure of Devoy Barracks, Naas, County Kildare, including severance or other pay, security or other costs; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13420/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 98 and 100 together.

I propose to dispose of Devoy Barracks as soon as is practicable. Agreement in general has been reached between the Department and Naas Urban District Council with regard to local requirements. The details are currently being addressed and it is hoped to have a definitive agreement concluded in the near future. A process of rezoning is required before the property can be offered for sale on the open market. It is anticipated that this process will take a number of months. The sale of the barracks will take place when this process has been completed.

No additional costs relating to personnel affected by the closure were incurred.

The cost, to date, of providing security at Devoy Barracks amounts to £80,540 which has been more than offset by savings in the manning and maintenance of an unnecessary installation.

Question:

105 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Defence the plans, if any, he has with regard to the careers of the former teaching staff at Devoy Barracks, Naas, County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13425/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 99 and 105 together.

Two of the teaching staff employed at the former Army Apprentice School, Devoy Barracks, Naas, County Kildare are currently employed at the Signals School, Curragh. At the present time, the Department of Education and Science is actively pursuing the possibility of redeployment to institutes of technology for the remaining staff members, in consultation with the staff concerned and with their trade union. My Department is keeping in touch with the Department of Education and Science in the matter.
