Vol. 505 No. 2

Written Answers. - National Monuments.

Michael Ring

Question:

146 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the works carried out on Shrule Abbey, Shrule, County Mayo; the plans, if any, there are to carry out additional works; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [13390/99]

As I indicated in my reply to Question No. 345 on 23 February 1999, Shrule Abbey is a national monument in State care which had recently been inspected. Following the inspection, essential works were to be carried out at the monument in April by Dúchas, the heritage service of my Department.

I am pleased to inform the Deputy that my commitment to undertake these essential works has been met and that the works – consisting of flaunching and painting of walls, are ongoing at present.
