Vol. 505 No. 2

Written Answers. - Garda Recruitment.

Dick Spring

Question:

148 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the height requirement for male and female applicants for entry to An Garda Síochána in the period 1982 to date under the Garda Síochána (Admissions and Appointments) Regulations, 1988. [13384/99]

The height requirements for male and female applicants for the Garda Síochána – not less than five feet nine inches and five feet five inches, respectively – have remained unchanged in the period 1982 to date.

The Garda Síochána (Admissions and Appointments) Regulations, 1988 as amended, prescribe the above height requirements. The Garda Síochána (Appointments) Regulations, 1981, which were repealed by the 1988 regulations, provided for the same height requirements. In 1972 the minimum height requirement for male applicants was reduced from five feet nine inches to five feet eight inches and restored to five feet nine inches in 1981.

There is a provision for persons with certain special technical qualfifications to be exempted from the general height requirement when being recruited to specialised areas of An Garda Síochána such as the Garda Band and telecommunications section.
