Vol. 505 No. 5

Written Answers. - Contingency Plans for 2000.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

127 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the contingency plans, if any, his Department has in place in the event of a breakdown in public order following year 2000 disruption; the discussions, if any, his Department has had with the Department of Defence in relation to any co-operation between the gardaí and the Defence Forces; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14153/99]

The Deputy may wish to note that on foot of Government decision S 180/20/10/0007A of 16 February, l999 my Department established a cross-unit working group to, inter alia, examine contingency requirements for the millennium changeover period.

To date, the group has been in communication with the Garda Síochána, the Department of Defence, Dublin Corporation, the millennium committee, and the Department of Tourism, Sport and Recreation with a view to developing contingency plans, for the type of difficulty referred to by the Deputy, not later than 30 June next.

I am confident that the group will meet its objective.
