Vol. 505 No. 6

Written Answers. - Care and Maintenance Statistics.

Richard Bruton

Question:

157 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Health and Children the child care centres excluded from inspection under section 59 giving details of the number of institutions in each category; the number of children in each category, distinguishing children with a physical handicap from those with a mental handicap; and if he will make a statement on the timing of the proposed inspection to these categories. [14341/99]

I presume the Deputy is referring to institutions for the care and maintenance of children with a physical and mental handicap mentioned in section 59 of the Child Care Act, 1991. The latest information available in my Department as regards the number of institutions in these categories and the number of children in each is set out in the following table. These centres are specifically excluded from the provisions for inspection of children's centres under the Child Care Act. However, the Act is to be amended to remove this exclusion. Regulations will be prepared by my Department and an appropriate inspection system will be established. The introduction of such a system on foot of this amendment will be subject to prior consultations with health boards and with representatives of the voluntary agencies concerned. I expect that this process will be completed next year.
