Vol. 505 No. 6

Written Answers. - Building Societies.

Richard Bruton

Question:

184 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if his attention has been drawn to the problem which arose with joint shareholder accounts in previous re-arrangements of the status of financial institutions; and if this issue has been resolved for any change in status of building societies. [14478/99]

In so far as building societies are concerned, the provisions in the Building Societies Act, 1989, relating to conversion of a society to a public limited company were amended with effect from 4 April 1997 by the Central Bank Act, 1997, to ensure that joint account holders do not lose any entitlements, solely because of the order of names on the account, in the context of such conversions.
