Vol. 505 No. 6

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

John Bruton

Question:

277 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science if a classroom assistant will be retained at Boyerstown national school, County Meath, in view of the fact that she provides a vital service to a number of pupils with special needs; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14524/99]

I am aware of the case to which the Deputy refers. I understand that the person in question is on a FÁS scheme, which finishes in October 1999.

An application from Boyerstown national school for a special needs assistant is being considered by my Department at present. I have asked my Department's inspectorate to investigate the special care needs of pupils attending the school with a view to putting any necessary support services in place as speedily as possible.
