Vol. 505 No. 6

Written Answers. - Quality Bus Corridors.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

92 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if she will make a statement on the quality bus corridors; the current utilisation of these corridors; and if she has satisfied herself with the progress in implementing quality bus corridors. [14538/99]

Implementation of the quality bus corridors is being overseen by the Dublin Transportation Office which is under the aegis of my colleague, Deputy Noel Dempsey, Minister for the Environment and Local Government.

The Dublin Transportation Office's short-term action plan has set a target for completion of the QBCs by end 2000. I understand that the Lucan and Malahide corridors are now fully operational and that the Stillorgan, Finglas and Blanchardstown corridors will be completed by the end of July. The design stage of all the remaining corridors has been completed and construction on the Swords corridor is due to commence in August 1999. Current indications are that eight of the 12 corridors will be operational by the end of 1999.

Indications to date on the Lucan and Malahide corridors are that there has been an encouraging shift to public transport. The acquisition by Dublin Bus during 1999 of an additional 150 buses funded by the EU and the Exchequer will significantly increase capacity and frequency on the QBCs. The first of these buses have already been delivered and are in use.
